We are pleased to announce that the Multifamily Pressure House (MFPH) has settled into its permanent home in The Bronx, New York with the Association for Energy Affordability, Inc (AEA). This brand new and highly anticipated product allows for nearly infinite training possibilities and includes an expanded batch of pressure scenarios programmed into its iPad control system.

Our construction crew of Ric Blevins, Thad Moore, and Andrew Hastings had a fantastic time in New York and were thoroughly impressed by the AEA facilities and staff. Additionally, the MFPH was well received by AEA staff who seemed excited to see how far they could push this unique tool.

Grey sky over some bright ideas.

EMC recently had the great privilege of attending the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. This competition challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

It was certainly a unique and amazing environment. Imagine a neighborhood comprised of the most energy efficient and technologically advanced – not to mention reasonably priced and gorgeous – homes on the planet nestled snuggly between the Jefferson and Lincoln Monuments on the National Mall of Washington D.C. Others shared our interest. The opening weekend was packed with excited visitors eager to learn about the future of housing.

One observation that struck a chord with us was the ubiquity of the “do it yourself” (DIY) attitude. We heard this word a lot in the tours and understand it to be a sign of the times. From electronics and programming to building construction and gardening, more and more people are finding the resources they need to create. Students were so proud to explain how they had built the homes themselves with little or no professional help. They were eager to explain how they had made the construction process simpler and more efficient through smart design. The Belgian Team even developed a unique construction system which enables a group of four to construct their own home without prior construction knowledge using the most basic tools. Many homes incorporated small agricultural projects encouraging the homeowner to become ever more self reliant.

It was also good to see the variety in the application of the solar energy generating equipment. Who knew solar panels could be applied in so many unique ways. While some photovoltaic arrays were beautifully integrated into the architecture, others were celebrated as the tech-ish, mount-to-anything, highly-practical energy solution that they are. Additionally, we saw a strong preference for locally sourced products, highly-efficient air to air heat exchangers, energy recovery ventilators, evacuated tube solar thermal for domestic hot water, a wide variety of hyper-insulation techniques, as well as countless innovative ways to save money by modifying or rejecting standard construction practices.

It is a challenge to explain just how beneficial a visit to the Solar Decathlon can be. Comparing that many houses up close allows one to gain an intimate understanding of each team’s unique approach towards implementing new high performance technology as well as new innovations of old technology into aesthetically gorgeous and highly livable architectural expressions. A comprehensive understanding is reached which cannot be measured.

Thank you to all of the hard working and extraordinarily talented teams for your contribution to the ever mainstreaming of sustainable concepts in the construction industry. I hope that this event will manifest in more consumers demanding these kinds of homes or upgrading their existing homes, as well as more of the private sector having the information and resources to make these kinds of homes possible. Expect EMC to continue creating even more successful training products to help lower our nations energy bill.

A video documentary will be coming soon. For now you can view more information by visiting the official webpage of the Solar Decathlon 2011.

The MTDC is essentially a custom built cargo trailer outfitted with the latest and greatest in weatherization technology. It contains a huge assortment of weatherization equipment secured in custom bomb-proof cabinets as well as a generator, lights, A/C, outlets, and an insulation blowing machine.
